What a Waste

At some point in the last 30 years or so someone put sheetrock over the plaster in the 2 parlors. So they wouldn't have to fit it around the head blocks, which extended 2.5 inches over the top of the casing, they sawed off the tops of the blocks. Today I finally took the last of them off.

Where should we put the drapes? Here? No, how about over here? No, I like them here better. How about here...

Not everyone should be allowed to use a drill with a Philips screw driver bit.

Goop factor eight! This gives you some idea of how bad the paint is in this room. That is the profile of the casing.

Replacements are standing by

Argh! We're so lucky that a dropped ceiling was never put into our parlor.

However, the drapery hardware holes are no stranger to us. It drives me NUTS. I'd consider getting some replacements milled, but all of the woodwork is faux bois and I know I'd never be able to match it.

Your are going to be lovely.

I had the same problem with drapery hardware in the dining room. I was able to fill and micro faux grain, as I call It. That room was stripped to bare wood and shllacked.

How did you know what the sawn off top parts looked like? Are there intact ones in other rooms?

Greg said...

Yes, all of the first floor rooms have these. Second floor are similar, but more plain.

It really does make me sick to my stomach when I see things like this. So stupid. I'm glad you were able to reproduce them, though.

When I first bought the place I was complaining to my neighbor about this when he said. "Yea, I did the same thing at my house. It just made It easier to put in the sheetrock." I did not know how to respond.

Greg,

I hired someone to replace the gutters on my California bungalow, and I came home to find he'd sawn off the rafter ends. Fortunately, he was not there, or I'd be in jail for homicide. The whole appearance of the house was changed/ruined.

Wow! Karen that is unbelievable. How could they they think that was ok?

I was really fortunate that the idiots who completely covered my Queen Anne cottage with ugly shingles did not chop off the window trim when they did so. They did, however, saw all the interior doors in half lengthwise. ACK.

Yea, you are lucky. Repairing the damage to the exterior windows from when the asbestos siding was put on was a big, expensive job.

Sawed the doors in half?!?!? Why the heck did they do that?

the original owners of my home hacked a bulls-eye square to fit a gable closet...it makes me laugh every time I see it (the other gable closet isn't hacked. The funny thing is, when the previous owners installed fake tile paneling (the room is now a bathroom) they popped off the square and left it off. I found it in a pile of rubbish and it took me 2 years to figure out that it wasn't just a scrap. :) It's where it belongs now.

So they were butchers but lazy because they did't bother to throw away what they hacked off.
