Dotting Is and Crossing Ts
Six months later I can say I am officially done with the foyer. Whew! Never thought I'd write that! I was waiting for the little table to arrive via FedEx and it arrived today. While it is true I still need to work on the front doors and the pocket doors leading in to the parlor, those are big enough projects that I can consider them projects in and of themselves, so they don’t really count. It is all about compartmentalizing, people. That is how I keep from going insane.
The "before" pictures are really a retrospective of before and during the project. Anyone interested in the entire project, start to finish can select the “foyer” label from the drop down list on the left. The “after” photos at the end are all new shots taken today. I think they come closer than a lot I’ve taken at capturing the real color of walls, wood, carpet and rugs. You can thank the late evening, overcast sky for that. Between the front doors and the window in the stairs, a lot of my shots tend to get washed out.

I didn't do the stairwell window in natural wood for a few reasons. First, it was painted a while ago. Much of the wood was shellacked, so stripping the casing would have been possible, but the sash, and other parts were replaced and never shellacked. On top of that, the stool and other parts got a lot of southern sun. It would have been difficult yo get everything back to bare wood. It would have meant leaving the scaffolding up for a weeks more and the end results may not have been worth it. I thought about graining it, but I think it would have been noticeable. In the end, paint was the best solution for me.

I am so jealous of all the wonderful period features your house has! My 1910 Folkish Victorian isn't nearly as exciting. My woodwork is painted white, and wasn't ever even stained! Well done!
I totally understand your place with that- I stripped all the woodwork in my last house, and this time around the paint will stay. The advantage is that nothing detracts from your staircase....

Yea, I've stripped tons of woodwork in this house. I'm at the point of being "on my second house" with just this one house.

Amazing, a staggering amount of work, but worth every minute in the joy you must feel just being in that house.
oh man, this just kills me. i'd forgotten you'd done all the plaster. the finials and newel tops! the light fixtures! love your little table! i was worried about the carpets, but they're just right, and add a lot of light to a very woody place. it's gorgeous, and if i had $150 i'd send you a gigantic 4' bouquet of wine colored chrysanthemums and chinese lanterns and tall stems with little white spiky flowers on the ends and boxwood for the table. you win.
