The Night Time is the Right Time
Yesterday I showed the new front door windows from the inside with the light coming in. Here is what the house looks like in the evening now.
What I should have gotten a picture of was the light show that was put on this morning with the direct eastern, morning sun hitting the doors. It was almost psychedelic.

Wow!!
That looks super!
I have been a blog reader of yours for a couple of years now and have just bought an old house (1898 victorian) in NC. I have a question about the boiled linseed oil & turpentine that you use to revive the wood once you have stripped it...how much of each do you use? I looked through all the blogs and couldn't find detail other than the 2 together?
thanks,
Anne
I use a 50:50 mix of BLO to turpentine. I wipe on light coat with a folded paper towel and quickly wipe off any excess.
Just lovely! You do such great work.
I drove by today to admire your masterpiece. I need to return when the light is better, You just keep outdoing yourself.
What is it with that car on the street next to your house?
I should have everyone over again for a better look. As for the car, that belongs to my poor tenant who was in an accident last week. Really ashame. She just started the next semester at school and now has no transportation.
How bout a peek at your todo list--what's next? Are different projects jockeying for position?
I am all over the map about a non-working fireplace in my house; I know you put your chimney work on hold because you needed to bring in a mason and didn't want to hire out. Seems you've tackled technically challenging work before (understatement); I'd be curious to know what masonry hurdle is stopping you from taking it on yourself. I need to rebuild a cracked firebox and put in a liner. Child's play for Gary in Dayton I bet, but not so easy for me. What does your chimney need?
As an aside, I can't wait til he's not mayor anymore (OK, he's a great mayor, so I'm torn); this nasty political business of "if you're DIY on your house you must be letting your job slip" is such a bummer for his blog. It kills me to think about all the interesting things he must be doing but not writing about because it would be bad for his career.
Greg, please don't run for office...yet!
Next up is the back porch, but that needs better weather. As for the chimneys and fireplaces, they pretty much need everything - new firebox, liner, and brought up through the roof.
I can assure you I will never run for office. I am no politician. Dictator? Military strong man? Maybe, but never a politician.
What about the stove in your kitchen? Didn't you buy coal for it or something? How's that going?
Dictator? Ha ha! I think there's less call for them these days! :-)
You hit the "blue hour" perfectly for this photo. It's gorgeous! Nice job on the windows. They add even more character to your already distinctive home.
When did the 'visitor' from the upstairs window move out to the front porch?
So pretty!
