Set Faces On Stun

Ok folks, here are some pictures with paint. I’ve included a few before shots to bring everything in to perspective. This is also an interactive blog entry because I’m looking for some feedback, but first, lets look at some pictures. You might want to put a towel down on the keyboard or just grab your drool bucket before you start viewing.

Before

After

Now for the questions. The color swatch below is the color I’m considering for the roller shades for the windows. Eventually I would like to do something a little more elaborate with the window treatments (And no, I’m not celebrating Gay Pride this weekend just because I’m a man that uses the term Window Treatments - Not that there’s anything the wrong with that. Everybody’s personal sexual preference is there own business.), but right now I’m hemorrhaging cash, so I’m going with a simple roller shade from Smith-Noble. The question is, would that color go well with the walls (See, a Gay man might know the answer to this question), or should I go with a darker or lighter color?

Also, would the cabinets look odd if they were painted the same color as the rest of the trim, or should I play off the green of the walls. I like the simpler approach, but that’s just me, and I accept the fact that I’m a bit odd in these areas, and don’t always make the best choices.

Now let me switch into Corporate Shill Mode for a moment…processing…processing…processing….

The little bucket below I picked up a few days ago. It is so useful for painting I wanted to share it with you. It is called The Handy Paint Pail and it really is handy. I painted with oil based paint for about 5 hours today and didn’t have to wash my hands afterwards. There are disposable liners. It is comfortable to hold – even for 5 hours, and there is a little magnet at the top that the metal part of the paint brush sticks to. This is by far the best $10.00 I have spent in a long time.

Also, If you’ve never been to the Smith-Noble web site to order blinds or drapes you should try it. It is very well designed considering they are dealing with things as complex as blinds and drapes (lots of options). The web site is easy to follow, well laid out, and fast.

That kitchen is BEAUTIFUL! If I were you I would just live in the room til the house is done. Move the bed in there and have that be the first thing you see in the morning. It would definitely set the day off on the right foot! :)

My $.02 for the cabinets are to paint them the same as the trim color. You can always add accents of color on the drawer pulls and knobs or even go with a complimentary color in your window shades.

Personally I don't know that I would go with the same color as the walls on the shades (and on my monitor they look the same color) But then again...judging from what Smith-Noble has available in roller shades...that or white may be your only option. (Actually the Tweed in Natural or Wheat might not be bad either. But you would want to order a swatch before placing a final order just to be sure.)

Good Luck!

WOWIE! That's gorgeous! Love the color!

I agree with Heather on painting the cabinets the same color as the trim.

Smith & Noble has gorgeous stuff, but I've always thought they were a tad pricey. Won't give my opinion on the windows as I tend to go as boring and minimal as possible.

You are a good painter! I wish my husband was a good painter so he could help me.
Regarding your latent decorating urges- most of us girls would want to see a pic of the actual windows you are covering and know which direction they face- how about a shot of the cabinets too? Without having seen them, I would guess painting them the trim white would be fine, depending on where the trim hits them. Roller shades in kitchens can be kind of dicey- if you have a spaghetti explosion you cannot clean them up (they are usually fabric). Are you going for Victoriana strictly or can you do something more contemporary? I have had great luck with S and N's bamboo roman shades- and they are reasonable and bring a modern twist to my old house. Just a thought.

Looks fantastic- you should be really proud. I love the colors also. If you want a more streamlined look, I would keep the cabinets the same color. I believe when we were looking at colors, the recommendations were to use 2 mainly, using 3 primary gets complicated. But if you could figure out a muted yet complimentary green, it might work well.

For the shades, I myself would lean towards a neutral like a beige, just because I think you don't want the shades to grab the attention. Other things in your kitchen are more worthy of it.

We ordered a shade for our bedroom from Smith-Noble and it was just fine.

It is so great to see you at this point. I remember when I first started reading your blog, which was when you did the dumbwaiter/pass-thru. Congratulations for a job well done!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The cabinets are a sort of assortment of salvaged pieces (hutches and things) so I can't show any photos of those yet. They are in a pile in the dining room.

I am trying to stick with a mainly Victorian theme. I saw the bamboo shades on the web site and really liked them, but not sure if they would work with what I'm doing. There seems to be a consensus here, though, that the green is not a good choice. Something, like beige or neutral (the color of bamboo) would be a better choice, so I'll go for it.

Thanks!

For what its worth, what with this comment being a little late, I'd have to say that I agree with the consensus on two things; 1. What you have done so far looks awesome. 2. Those greens are too close to the same color. I'm not sure I can give good advice on the cabinets so I'll abstain from that one.

take the trim colour and the wall colour and mix them together to paint the cabinet door fronts, leaving the cabinets the same colour as the trim. and i think that the bamboo blinds would look so great with that green that you've chosen, even though they're not really victorian, if you like them then go for it!

whatever you decide on i'm sure it'll turn out great!
